Comment: Professor Katz is a visiting professor from MIT, and he's an awesome lecturer! His lectures are well-organized, and he's very articulate and passionate about his subject. Homework is reasonable, and he's very quick to send out mass emails to address common questions about it. Final exam ended up being a cumulative take home, which was also reasonable. He seems like a cool, laid-back guy.

Comment: Prof. Mikkelsen was really nice and definitely wanted everyone to do well. However, some of the assignments were just brutal and the supplementary material confused more than it helped... Exams were totally fair though, and it's very possible to get an A in this class while at the same time still learning what you are supposed to.

Comment: Very enthusiastic and engaging lecturer! She was also incredibly helpful in office hours. The assignments, although nitpicky, were sometimes really interesting when we got to apply the concepts we learned to real languages. The tests were incredibly straightforward, and the class was not difficult as long as you stuck closely to the reading. Her TAs Kelsey and Jevon deserve a lot of credit, though, with their prompt grading. The only problem is that there are sometimes tangents/mistakes made during her lectures.

Comment: Mikkelsen is amazing. So much enthusiasm. It's like teaching linguistics isn't even a job for her -- it's more like it's what she does for fun. The class itself is both super interesting and incredibly easy. Highly recommended.

Comment: This is a really interesting class for those interested in linguistics. The professor is enthusiastic and also likes to talk about semantics, which is her study. The graders/GSIs can be a bit nit-picky with the weekly homework, but the assignments are good practice for the exams. There's a phonetics quiz, a midterm, and a final. I couldn't finish the midterm in time and from what I've heard from previous semesters, other students couldn't too, but there's a curve for the exams. There's no lecture notes online, so you're expected to show up to class. They also don't allow laptops or iPads to take notes, so you have to bring your own notebook. The exams can be a bit tricky, so you just have to study, study, study.
