Comment: The class is very fast-paced in topics, and Paulin doesn't really help with his large homework sets every week, along with the weekly quizzes. The exams are tough too. However, he does upload his lecture notes, so attending lecture isn't crucial, and discussions weren't mandatory either (except for when you had quizzes and homework to submit).

Comment: Professor Coward is the only professor at Cal I've ever had (I'm a 2nd semester senior writing this) that truly cares about students. Despite how large the course is, he invests a ton of time into his students. If you need help, you should absolutely approach him so don't be scared to go to his office hours. Talk to him! Sit in the front in lecture and get to know him. He will help you just as long as you reach out to him. He's one of the few professors I've ever had that is grounded in the reality of Berkeley's intense environment, and for that, I am thankful.

Comment: Don't be intimidated by his rating. The class is totally fair in terms of assignments and exams and aligns pretty much exactly with the textbook. If you have a good GSI (I loved mine), you should be fine, regardless of the dry (and often sleep-inducing...) lectures. Also, Vojta is very approachable outside of class, so be proactive and seek out his help. Good luck!

Comment: Its dangerous to take a class with Coward. No homeworks, no quizzes, 100% final (if you do better than on midterms). You have to be very disciplined and responsible in order to learn. Since I had other classes that were harder and required more effort (assignments every week), I always left math 1B for the last minute, to the extreme that I did not show up for 2nd midterm. As a result, I spent most of dead week just learning the material by myself since I opted for the 100% final. I did excellent on the final and got an A (the final was very fair tending to easy), but dead week drove me crazy and I did poorly on my other finals. If you are disciplined, Coward might be for you, otherwise it can be so dangerous...

Comment: Not very helpful, and has a weird style of teaching that i can only describe as useless. Granted, I passed the class but i taught myself all of the material. Went to lectures every day and they were pretty useless. Avoid if you can.

Comment: If you can teach yourself calculus, then he will be your best choice! Useless lecture but good exams.

Comment: I did not really enjoy this class due to Mr Coward's teaching style and class set-up. He did not assign homework and our grade was only based on two midterms and a final, and you did not even have to go to discussion. He was very enthusiastic and seemed to care for his students a lot, giving us constant life lessons. I felt he did waste a lot of time and he would sometimes cram material in the few days before a midterm. He is a nice guy though.

Comment: Lectures were useless and homework was not really needed. Practice exams were also full of mistakes and didn't have answer keys either. This was very frustrating, but you just needed to do the exams with the SLC or a GSI and you were set since practice exams were very similar to real exams. There was also a generous curve, so it was not terrible overall.

Comment: Vojta is a really awful lecturer, and when I went into office hours he was really unhelpful and pretty uncomfortable. However, the assignments were fair enough, though sometimes really difficult, and his tests were hard, but well-done.
