Comment: He taught the metabolism section of MCB 102 during Spring 2016. Miller was the best of the three professors that semester. All of his lectures were clear, and his test was very fair. The material was dense and possibly challenging, but most of us were able to understand it thanks to Miller. Lectures consist of mostly arrow-pushing, which can be helpful for visual learners like me. He reused some of his chem 135 lecture slides.

Comment: I came into MCB 102 absolutely terrified of this class, especially Professor Thorner's section. He gives off a super intimidating vibe in lecture and isn't very receptive to questions in lecture and sasses his students back somewhat rudely. With that said, he is much more helpful in office hours. His exam this semester was definitely tricky. There was a whole section just on T/F from the book that was worth 20/100 points, so read the book and know it inside out! Partial credit isn't really a thing either on his exams: many questions are 4-point MC questions and other write-in questions are graded pretty harshly. Thorner also doesn't give out stats from his exam--we only knew that the average was 52% and that the highest grade obtained was 85%. I ended up with a 60% on the exam. Do the old exams, find ones from the years back--the way he asks questions are very similar throughout the years even though it might be on different topics!

Comment: probably one of the worst professors I've had. His exam was extremely hard (the mean was 50 and highest score was 85). He talks about so many different things in lecture and we still had to read the book. Try your best not to take MCB 102 with him, because I hated his section

Comment: Professor Ingolia is a great professor overall. He's very intelligent and his lectures make sense, but many times he didn't get to finish the lectures on time so I couldn't hear what he was saying for the last couple slides. He's also easy to approach and ask questions

Comment: Professor Calendar is one of the best professors I've had in college. He clearly says what he wants us to know for the exam (and they were on the exam). He also ends the lectures early and he's very nice at office hours

Comment: He tells you what is going to be on the exam, unlike the other two professors, but the exam was much harder this year. This section of the course is overloaded with information compared to the other two sections, so make sure you keep up with the material. I liked how he ended many lectures with a song, and posted lecture note PDFs and slides online.

Comment: His test was extremely difficult and unfair (the hardest of the three exams in this class), and when you send him an email or ask him a question, he responds with an attitude. Also, he tested on both textbook and lecture material, unlike the other two professors, who only tested on lecture material. Would not recommend taking MCB 102 with him.

Comment: Botchan was a mixed bag. It was his first time teaching the DNA part of the course (the last part), so I can really say he was really bad. His slides were all over the place at times since he just mixed many of them from different professors and hasn't really made his own lecture sequence. His likes to mumble a lot on irrelevant stuff, so you just start doing random things on your laptop until he finishes he's off-topic views on different manners in science. His exam was really fair although he didn't provide any real study guide, he told you what to focus on and what is not going to be on the exam. His office hours helped, and he's very approachable outside class.

Comment: I didn't like Calendar's lecture style (reading basically of the slides), but he's really good person when it comes helping students (office hours or in class). He tells you EXACTLY what you need to know on the exam although this time the GSIs just made his exam harder, so everybody failed. The average on his exam was 51, which was his lowest ever. He also has a reader, so you don't need to read the book in his section, which helped a lot. Go to this office hours before the exam, and he'll tell you even more in terms of what is not going to be on the exam, so you can eliminate many useless facts and concentrate on the "real stuff".
