Comment: Nice guy but completely lost as a professor. From the beginning of the semester, he said he wanted a lot of input from the class on grading, which sounded great. Unfortunately, as time went on it felt more like he had no idea what he was doing and didn't even understand basic aspects of teaching. This resulted in some of the most bizarre and frustrating grading policies I've ever seen. Assignments included a final paper that was 8-20 pages long with a one sentence prompt, an in-class essay (done at home), and a group presentation. Lectures were pretty slow and dry. Though he did have a few guests through video conference that were incredibly interesting. It was his first semester, so maybe he will get better. But, I absolutely would NOT take another class with him.

Comment: Firstly, Azevedo isn't really the head of this class - it's Sunshine Workman who keeps order. Both her and Americ are inspirational and really provoke you to think about the deeper meaning of leadership and your involvement in creating social change in whatever field you are passionate about. Not exactly "life changing," but definitely life enriching. Go in to Office Hours - Sunshine really knows how to give advice. Bond with your classmates - you meditate in the dark, meet outside of class, and share stories together. Weekly essays/assignments - they allow redos if you don't do well. Final grant proposal - either a social or personal project. Final presentation - short speech in front of the class.

Comment: It's not just about her teaching. She is an aweful human being. I got chance to study with her in summer program in Kenya. She was our liaison between the horrible program and students, but she disrespected us and demanded us to shut up. She played an dictatorship role in Kenya. She taught us and talked about Uganda the entire 3 weeks in Kenya, and I had not clue why does not she teach in Uganda. She talked about IDP camp, but when we did go to the camp, she did not touch a single children or talked to anyone there. She is very uncomfortable with the locals, so you can imagine that when she was in Uganda, she probably only looks good on papers. She seemed nice on the surface and claimed her husband is African American, but she has white superior concept, and she gave us thousand of pages of reading and 5 papers in the last week of our traveling in Kenya. She is the wrong travel professor and she is a bitch.
