Comment: Cate was definitely a relief after having Williams for the first half of the course! Overall, Cate is a nice person and definitely seems he knows what he is talking about but his lectures are so monotone. This makes lectures really boring to attend. His exams are pretty weird. Definitely look at his past exams though, because he asks very similar questions (or even the same ones). BUT, his exams have some of the most pointless and useless questions ever. Like measuring the geometric dimensions of dna molecules (WHY?!?!). The first part of his lectures regarding kinetics are fair (even questions regarding this on exams), because he teaches straight out of the textbook. But once he begins talking about DNA - that's when things get really annoying. His final segment of lectures after the midterm are really random. His lectures look like a bunch of random trivia compiled together. He talks for ages about random professors in the college and tries to kill time during lecture by making these irrelevant connections. In all he is a fair professor. He should just not lecture on dna unless there is a text that he bases his lectures out of - otherwise his lecture notes become the guide for the exam. And his lecture notes are so hard to follow and have ambiguous references - yeah you really don't learn anything from the latter part of the course. So this also boils down to self-studying and going to GSI office hours. Sometimes even GSIs have really no idea what we should study for his exams - like that's how random Cate's lectures get.

Comment: He has the most unorganized lectures you could ever get. The "lectures" he gives in class are mere topic outlines. The way he taught made it seem like he could have just given a topic outline for daily lectures - we would have been better off this way, because we wouldn't have had to waste our time going to lecture. Self-studying is the only way you can get by in this class because you learn nothing from lectures. He spends very little time talking about something, so you ultimately don't know anything about that topic he talks about unless you google it up. He doesn't give any useful information in class so its up to google and you to figure out what to know for his exams. It was a pain studying for his exam because you just didn't know what to expect from his disorganized, pointless lectures. Also, if you ever have guest lectures on electrochem - don't spend time studying it - it's never going to come up on exams even if instructors and GSIs say they would. He might be slightly enthusiastic about what his analytical chemistry, but at the end when he gives you no information about it and makes you google up everything about it, it's more like a pain to learn about all the chromatography and spectroscopy stuff. I'd say I was really interested in chemistry in high school, and 4A met my expectations. But when I took 4B with Williams... yeah none of what happened in this class met my expectations for how good a chemistry class should be. I guess you could excuse the way he taught this semester since it was his first semester, but I didn't see any improvement through the course of the semester in his teaching style (it kinda actually got worse), so definitely expect to SELF-STUDY everything! Good luck

Comment: Douskey taught the analytical chem portion of 4B. She was clearly enthusiastic about the material and it showed through her teaching. Exams were very fair and straightforward and were in the same format as the exams from the previous year.

Comment: Jamie Cate, for lack of better words, was essentially useless. Lectures were drab and dry, with a majority of it being him naming influential people in the field of chemical biology. There was little correlation between material learned in class and exams (ESPECIALLY in his portion of the final, lots of curveballs). Lecture was a bore to go and like the other reviewer I lost any interest I had in chem bio after his portion. The only positive is that assignments weren't that bad and could be completed rather quickly.

Comment: Poor lecturer. Not fair exams. Reviewing for his exams is like looking through random facts, and it is impossible to tell what materials are important. Assignments have nothing to do with the lectures or the exams. His exams are just random. Totally lost interest in chembio after his classes.

Comment: Very clear lecturer!!! Exams are similar to her past questions. Flipped Friday gives a lot of practice for exams. She cares about her students and is nice to talk to. It's lucky to have her in Chem 4B.

Comment: He's an interesting professor but not particularly my style. Some may love him, some may hate him. If you study well before class, you'll do great!!! I sometimes didn't and it threw me off.

Comment: Tried to make chem-bio intuitive but sometimes felt a lot like memorization. He brought relelvant information from outside the book. No mandatory homework!
