Comment: Ostertag's lectures go pretty quickly so notetaking can be a bit difficult, but it's all good info and her passion for the subject, especially concrete, is evident in her teaching. the two midterms were tough mostly because we only had an hour - they covered a lot of material so you had to be strategic about which questions you answered first. the final was better because time really wasn't an issue and the questions were pretty fair. the homework assignments were kind of annoying and time-consuming, so GSI office hours definitely helped. the textbook and reader were interesting to read, but pretty much only useful for the homework. i really loved the labs for this class even though the lab reports were a pain to write. overall, the class was tough but i really enjoyed it!

Comment: Monteiro is a boss. Not only does he know this material front and back (he did, in fact, write the text), he's actually excited about it! He has all sorts of stories that he throws in to lecture to help solidify the material and make it more "real world" in a non-construction way. My only complaint is that I think he should be given more lecture time for all the material we cover in this course. There was no time for taking notes. I felt his exams were fair (not easy, but fair). Some people did very well (like 100% kind of thing) but the mean was significantly lower than the highest grade. The final was comprehensive, but it did not cover old material in such great detail that it would have been impossible to prepare for it. The labs were fun (what CivE doesn't want to break steel and concrete?), but the lab reports were pretty time consuming. You don't end up having a total of 14 labs or whatever because many of them require multiple weeks' time (for curing, testing, etc on concrete samples). Speaking of the labs: Cruz Carlos is super rad. Carlos is cool to be in the lab with because, like Monteiro, he really loves the material covered in the class. Both Monteiro and Carlos welcome questions and are very approachable. I did not feel talked down to at all, nor was I ever treated like I was wasting their time.

Comment: Pretty interesting class. The labs were generally fun. Go to lectures because there are some things he says in class that isn't mentioned in the textbooks. Office hours are extremely helpful

Comment: Very enthusiastic and interested in what he teaches. Homework takes a couple hours of thought and reading the textbook - read the textbook! Labs are fun and very relevant to material taught in lectures. Exams are pretty difficult, however, but shouldn't present too much of a problem if you know what to expect. Expect: Steel Alloy Phase Diagram, Moisture Content problems, conceptual Wood questions, Cement types and Concrete Mixes

Comment: Very interesting class! and a great professor as well. He is quite enthusiastic about the material. I definitely recommend him as the professor to take for CE60. His midterms and final are very conceptual and it helps a lot if you attend his lectures.

Comment: This has been the best class I have taken here at Cal. Monteiro is enthusiastic about all of the different materials you cover in the class so it makes learning the different details about it easy to learn. You do need to read the book in order to do well because he usually puts small details that you need to remember on the test. He will answer any question in office hours even up till a few minutes before the midterms. Labs were fun and a lot of the time you could finish up early. Shout out to the GSI's Sean and Kemal who would help out with any questions about the lab reports or homework. Homework could be somewhat challenging, so you had to be careful with what you turned in.

Comment: Ostertag is a tough woman, but she can be soft at times too. She seemed to noticeably prefer the students who knew the material. Her exams were tough but fair. She really loves concrete, and she has many interesting stories. You'll work hard, but it's worth it.

Comment: Pay attention to what he says in lecture since the powerpoints aren't super useful. Going to lecture is definitely a must. The exams are reasonable if you do well on the homeworks and labs and go to lecture.

Comment: This is a introductory course in civil eng materials which covers concrete as well. A lot of details to be memorized, but Monteiro is very enthusiastic in the lecture. First exam is easy, second is fair, and the final is harder.
