Ratings for Demmel, J W
Based on 36 ratings for this instructor.
Comment: Demmel is a straightforward professor. He goes over all the examples in the textbook. Lectures aren't mandatory and are only necessary if you don't understand the basics. In fact, he usually spends a significant amount of time proving theorems instead of working trickier example problems. He does a great job posting past midterms and past finals. However, ultimately his exams are extremely difficult in order to maintain his class curve.

Comment: He is a really nice guy. Class wise, tests were tricky and difficult. If I could have gone back in time, I should have gone to office hours. Advice: Read the book BEFORE class. That usually gives you a background on what he's teaching. He goes off of the book. This class was not easy. The final was probably the hardest I've taken here.

Comment: I stopped going to lectures because I realized the book was much better at teaching the concepts but I wish I would've gone more. If you take 16B, read the section from the textbook before class so you understand what Demmel is talking about. He'll tell you the first day that all the notes and audio are posted online, but his notes are all typed!! So it's super difficult to understand TYPED MATH NOTES (go to lecture, seriously, and sit in the front so you don't fall asleep). His midterms were tricky!!! And the final was just as tricky!!!
