Comment: I took Calculus in high school and had an amazing teacher and I think that's what helped me through a lot of this class. Furthermore, my GSI was amazing and dedicated and was really helpful. You can definitely tell that Professor Wodzicki is a very intelligent man. However, I doubt he realizes how he clear he comes off to students as I found his lectures to deviate greatly from what he actually tested on. I passed his class with a fine grade but I stopped going to lecture after the first midterm and self-studied from the book. Furthermore, I went to my GSI's office hours almost all the time and he had sat in almost all the lectures and basically retaught my section everything. If you're not good with abstract concepts, avoid at all costs.

Comment: Well. I don't know about others but I really enjoyed the course with the professor. I have learned a lot of interesting things throughout the course even when I learned the course before coming to UCB. The assignments and exams are really strict forward. All you have to do to succeed in the course is just a couple of assignments. You may also skip the lectures but they are really fun and interesting.

Comment: He is arrogant and unhelpful. I stopped attending lecture a little while after my first midterm because he would say remarks in the class about people that did not do well that would make me depress.

Comment: AVOID AT ALL COSTS! If you care about learning and understanding the material, avoid the class at all costs. If you care about your GPA absolutely avoid the class. He is utterly the worst professor at Berkeley. After the first 2 weeks of class there was only about 30 students out of 368 who enrolled who actually showed up to class because the rest gave up on the possibility of ever learning. Even if you have to stay an extra year at Berkeley to avoid him, my advice would be to do it. every lecture he would rant about how great of a teacher he was and how much clearer he was teaching us than what he had had to struggle through and lean back when he took the class, and failed it in his undergraduate years. Wodzicki would continue to lecture after the class period had ended on almost half of his lectures, up to an hour and a half after class on a few occasions. lecture was useless as Wodzicki considered it beneath himself to ever work out a single problem and did not write a single number until the 18th lecture, when he wrote a two squaring a linear transform. Very highly theoretical and more about having correct notation than teaching in any coherent manner. Consistently bereted students for being stupid and not on a level enough to understand "absolutely obvious" conjectures, proving that the whole class was full of idiots who never tried to learn and only cared about grades. Wodzicki constantly boasted that his exams were nothing like what was in the book or what was on assignments so that it was impossible to prepare for exams that correlated with nothing that was in the reading or that had been in his lectures. As a result MT1 had an average of 44% and MT2 had an average of 39%. I am a Mechanical Engineering student and came to Berkeley loving math. Wodzicki destroyed that for me, and I cannot come up with enough bad things to say about that man. If any administrators are reading this I please urge you to fire him. May no student have to go through the experience of Marizus Wodzicki's teaching.

Comment: Overall: Unless you are already upper division in mathematics, please avoid his classes. The level of his lecture is much higher than the textbook. If you have to take his Math54 by any reason, please make sure to fully understand the concepts rather than just doing computational exercises. Assignments: His homework are textbook problems and very similar to other professors. However, homework problems and exams are different styles. Helpfulness: His lecture is not helpful for understanding the material if you do not fully understand the textbook ahead. I would say his lectures are extension of textbook, rather than helping students understand the textbook. Exams: Midterm questions were hard to understand and not doable if you did not fully understand the CONCEPTS. Final questions were more doable, partly because he offered a review guide. Note: Professor use neither bcourses nor bspace. He posts and updates an PDF on his personal website. Students need to refresh it from time to time. Students will also need to look for the review guide on his website themselves.

Comment: This guy is legitimately the worst professor I've ever had. If I were a math major and taken this class, I would have switched majors. From the first day, no one understood his lectures because he always uses high level math to describe simple Linear Algebra concepts, and always goes on tangents. His exams are purely conceptual and are nothing like the homework. The average on midterms for this class was a 50%, versus the average for Pachter's Spring 2015 class was 92%. Despite his enthusiasm for math, he is a terrible professor and YOU MUST SWITCH PROFESSORS IF YOU GET HIM. I come from a STEM high school where math was my forte, but ended up getting a bad grade in this class. SAVE YOURSELF THE PAIN. SWITCH PROFESSORS.

Comment: Wodzicki isn't interested in teaching the course material. He's mostly interested in ranting about really abstract concepts instead while failing most of his students. Does he wonder why Pachter's class has a 400+ student turn out at his lectures and he only has less than 30?
