Comment: Awesome Prof. Calming voice, easy to listen to. Handouts are annoying to print (SO MANY PAGES), but they are very helpful in the end. Exams are difficult but fair.

Comment: Labs themselves were sometimes kind of difficult, as was NMR and the post-lab questions (optional, but important to know for the ICLRs). If you have a good GSI, they will make everything clear. I found that after a year of ochem, I was finally understanding good ochem lab technique. Fewer things went wrong in lab, and I was getting higher yields and higher scores. Still, some labs just didn't seem to work, and nobody in my section was able to get product. Maybe a problem with the reagents?

Comment: I took this SUMMER '13. While the course required a lot of studying and memorization, I found his teaching style effective and helpful. Liked the powerpoint skeleton notes. Often re-wrote them myself and re-worked out all the problems in order to study. Had to re-write mechs over and over, but ultimately, I got an A and was very proud and pleased. Taking this over the summer is a lot of work, but I'm VERY glad I did it because it went faster, less time to forget things before the final, and Viernes was great.

Comment: Great class with printed skeleton notes to fill out in class. Very fair exams. Suggests that you do the practice midterms/finals 2x before going into the real exam. It's exactly the same format. Weekly quizzes are identical problems from the homework problem sets. 5 homework quizzes, 10 minutes, 1 dropped score. you should really do well on the first 4 because the last quiz is just impossible to finish on time. 2 midterms 160 a piece, 1 final 220, 100 quizzes. averages were around 105/160 for midterms and 145 for final. i received 136 MT1, 143 MT2, 216 Final, 97 quiz score=overall A...suggest you take this course in the summer if you have time. not much work besides cranking yourself down 2-3 days before an exam or just a few hours the night before a weekly quiz. viernes is quirky and weird, but overall a very enjoyable professor.

Comment: JUST THE MOST AMAZING CHEMISTRY PROFESSOR EVER! His tests were very fair, and his lectures were well presented. Paying attention in class is important, but his office hours were very helpful also. Also, his choices for the ochem labs were a lot more fun. Taking this class over the summer was the best choice of my life because although it was fast paced, it was a lot more enjoyable. He knows his stuff and he teaches it well.
