Comment: I came into this class with a good amount of synthetic biology research. This course was still very useful and helpful to me. It went in depth into the techniques that I've used before and some of the science we learned in this class actually helped me in my own research and lab skills. John is incredibly passionate about this subject and BioE 140L was one of my most positive classes I have taken at Cal. Assignments were reasonable. Exam was fair. There is one midterm and a final proposal that takes a lot of time.

Comment: Learned a lot in both the lecture and lab components. Lecture went through the basics of synthetic biology, enough to begin doing research in the area. Midterm was very reasonable. Final proposal takes a while, but you have a lot of time to work on it and get feedback.

Comment: Liked the class and how we focused on learning Golden Gate Assembly. The final project was an original project proposal, meaning you had a lot of flexibility in the topic you chose. Lectures were a little dry and hard to understand, but if you've had experience in synthetic biology lab work, this class should be a breeze! The course focuses on teaching the theory behind lab techniques, and is a good way for those who lack experience to be on the same level as someone working in wetlab research.
