Comment: Dowall's a good lecturer, with a sly sense of humor. Sometimes he'd make a joke, I'd smile, and no one would laugh. He might seem off-putting at first. Class has way too much reading, but my GSI really pushed us into synthesizing it. The most ambitious discussion sections I've ever had. Lots of assignments. I learned a lot about the urban landscape.

Comment: The teacher is interesting and well traveled. The GSI ruined this class for me because she was rude and not understanding . There is a lot of reading (like 6 chapters a week) but no other homework besides 4 essays. Lecture is on a PowerPoint. They take attendance randomly (I think it was the GSIs' idea) and will not post slides even though there is no way anyone could write down everything shown.

Comment: Dowall sounds monotonous in the beginning, but he goes over basic planning terms in the beginning. However, what I do like about him is that he actually tries to get feedback on how to improve the course. There was a lot of reading, but he promises to have less. However, the material was really enlightening. Definitely different from a lot of other classes I've taken outside Cal; it really focuses on challenging how we look at our cities today, which is what CED is really known for doing. Go to discussion! They're pretty hands on in terms of planning exercises that require you to apply what you've learned in class.
