Comment: Can't understand his lecture at all. Assignments are okay, but his exam is super hard that I think only genius can do it. Overall, you need to learn everything by yourself.

Comment: Jean Walrand took over for probability from Satish Rao. The exams were really difficult and long. I remember seeing the final almost 25 pages long. Didn't really cover similar stuff to the homeworks. He supposedly said that Rao couldn't finish one of the exams in the designated time. Class was disorganized as a whole, especially with the experimental tutoring option. Enthusiastic and tries to help though. But I think he is too smart for those doing probability seriously for the first time. What he thinks should come naturally to people doesn't come so naturally to a large number of students.

Comment: He took over for the probability part, starting with "counting." With about a whole month remaining for the semester, we were done with all the standard cs70 materials, and he introduced new materials that were never taught in previous semesters, like LLSE, MMSE and so forth. He has a thick accent, so it's helpful to watch the webcast (if available) and play it at half speed at certain times. He is extremely smart, and he assumes the same for the students, so his midterm's mean&median both were around 45/100. After the midterm, he could not understand how the students could not correctly get "these obvious questions." The class as a whole was very disorganized. Especially for the new materials that he introduced, there didn't seem to be enough practice questions/homework questions. He is truly a nice person and tries to help the students, but if you really need to maintain GPA to declare or something like that, avoid him if possible. Of course, the whole Berkeley idea relies on YOU doing better than others, but still........
