Comment: Margaret Torn is an awesome professor, and ER102 is the best class I've taken at Berkeley! I was sad that I wouldn't be taking the course with Harte, but Margaret turned out to be extremely knowledgeable and is always willing to help students. She is also friendly and approachable. ER102 is a fantastic course, teaching you a new way of problem solving and a vast skill set that will be useful in a number of professions. The material is expansive, and it's amazing that they successfully teach so much within one semester. Granted, everyone has to work fairly hard, and the problem sets are time consuming, but it pays off in the amount you learn. Problem sets counted for 55% of the course grade in my semester, with the midterm as another 15% and the final as the remaining 30%. The exams were challenging but fair, though they were a bit time rushed. Torn and the GSIs (who were amazing as well, go to office hours!) understand these issues, and I'm fairly sure grading is designed to be fair and kind since they understand that the people taking the course want to be there, despite the fact that the material may be challenging at times. Plus, Margaret has a fairly important role at LBNL as a co-director of the Climate and Carbon Sciences Program. If you are an undergrad interested in research, she is always willing to talk with you about potential opportunities at LBNL and connect you with people who do what you are interested in, which is fantastic. If you are a grad student, I know that she is willing to talk with you about research ideas and more.
