Comment: He is definitely tough to follow, but if you put in effort to understand the readings and his lecture notes he's brilliant. That said, if you haven't read, class is entirely incomprehensible. He's down to discuss anything, and he makes it really easy to contribute to class discussion (he is really open to everyone's views). I like the guy, and he has hilarious digressions sometimes.

Comment: Assignments were pretty easy, as was the final [10 IDs + a choice of essays]. Lecture was horribly bad though. Can't really make sense of him - they're more like stream of consciousness style lectures than anything structured.

Comment: Altieri is super enthusiastic and always has interesting stories. He is sometimes difficult to follow, but the GSI's are pretty good about helping you out with that. He provides good analysis and allows for students to contribute significantly to the direction of the class.

Comment: I hated this class. Altieri's lectures were AWFUL and RAMBLING and I had no idea what he was talking about at least 80% of the time, and this class is the reason I decided not to be an English major even though I came to Cal thinking I might. Maybe I'm just not intellectual enough. Whatever, I read all of his lecture notes after every class and they made EVEN LESS SENSE. Those rare moments when I grasped what he was going on about were full of insight, but this probably goes down as the most off-putting English class ever. But his exams were identifications, which just requires memorization. I found them pretty easy and they were probably the only reason I got an A in the class.
