Comment: This class is pretty damn hard, but definitely worth it. The material is super dense, but is full of amazing ideas that for some reason we don't talk about very often in other English classes. Readings are every class, but never unreasonably long, plus Professor Hale knows the material so well she can even make sense of it to complete beginners like me. The only assignments are two essays, weekly discussion posts, an in-class presentation on one of the readings, and a take-home final that you get a day to do. Class is 100% discussion - she acts as facilitator when the conversation flows, but will step in to explain if people are obviously having trouble understanding what we're reading (which is often). My most difficult and rewarding class at Berkeley so far, you should take it. Professor Hale is unbelievably helpful and knowledgeable and makes this class amazing. Go to office hours, especially before essays! If you're an English major, you're missing out on a part of your education if you don't take this class. Aren't you tired of all that close reading? This opens up so many more avenues of analysis - it's the material that grad students study, that professors and critics look at when they look at literature. Just take the class already.
