Comment: This is for the Fall 2016 version of the course. I would take the students praising Wetzel's lecturing style with a very strong grain of salt. He has a very strong, jarring, and unsettling style of lecturing (he basically yells at the class an hour). Most normal students drop the class after they realize this. He has a pretty strong speech impediment (stutter), repeats himself oddly, and screeches. Sitting in the back row of Dwinelle 145 was uncomfortable. You definitely need to go to the first lecture before committing yourself to this class in your schedule (there is almost always space so there is no need to phase 1/2 this class). The other aspects of the class are fine: the paper and exams are really, really straightforward. He gives you a strict superset of the exam questions beforehand. You can honestly get away in the class without doing the reading, and just hunting through the reading when you need references for your paper and for your exam essay prompts. Unfortunately, participation is part of your grade, so you have to attend lectures if you want an A.

Comment: Very nice class. Wetzel is super enthusiastic about the course material and gives very riveting lectures that made this engineer really enjoy them. The midterm paper was very long but generously graded as was the rest of the course. reviews before exam are a must as Wetzel essentially tells you what will be on the exams. overall a very good and captivating lecturer.

Comment: Wetzel may have, at points, a strange style of lecturing, but he makes his class very interesting. He is extremely enthusiastic about the material, and each lecture feels fresh and new. The exams were very straightforward if you completed the short list of readings, and the sole term paper was, in short, easy. All in all, Wetzel is a great lecturer, and anyone looking to take 162A should make his class a priority.

Comment: I took this course P/NP and barely went to any lectures (thank you Podcasts!). The final exam was unbelievably easy. Wetzel is a bit difficult to listen to, but his enthusiasm makes lectures interesting. I'd recommend checking out the podcasts on iTunes to get a feel for his lecture style. The course was logically organized and the paper was doable. The assigned books were actually quite helpful, and The Leopard and The Bridge on the Drina are amazing readings and very refreshing.

Comment: He knows his stuff and loves it! Go to office hours, I heard it helps. He lectures too much and too fast, and its hard to remember everything but he makes history into a fascinating story.
