Comment: NOT HELPFUL at all. You can't understand him during lectures, expects you to know most of the course materials. His exams were ridiculously hard. For the second midterm he gave 6 problems for less than 50 minutes. Avoid having him for your lower div math classes.

Comment: I took Math 53 with Givental. This was the biggest mistake of my life since Nagasaki. There are NO tests online, and even he will not give them to you!! The final was unbelievable the worst! I would not recommend you take the class unless you are a kind person who learns from the textbook. The GSI was very helpful, and hot. I hope you do not make same the mistake as me.

Comment: Givental is an extremely effective lecturer. He used Cartan as our textbook and added in other interesting problems to the homework as well. He speaks clearly, thoroughly explaining everything, and has beautiful boardwork. I don't know what the other 185/h185 classes are like, but I really enjoyed the material we covered with Givental. I think some of the stuff might be what is covered by math 205, the grad course in complex analysis, which is really awesome because it was all really cool and most of the homework was fun to do too (seriously, complex analysis has some beautiful stuff!). He is also really helpful during office hours. He goes beyond just answering your questions and is very friendly, so you should definitely go to his office hours! His exams and grading were fair. I did relatively well on the hw and abysmally poorly on the exams (but that was due to my own inadequacy), but they were weighed roughly the same, and in the end I did alright overall. Actually, I think Givental must have been generous with the grading, because I felt like I deserved a much lower final grade than what he gave me in the end. Givental is so nice!! Plus, he's really funny and adorable :3.

Comment: Poor lecturer to be honest. It's hard to get what he is trying to say but you can learn a lot once you understood what he is trying to say. He taught you a lot of actual math instead of just what you can learn from books. Very enthusiastic professor towards his research and always want to share with us LOL. He is super cute but his tests are not cute at all. Some of them are okay once you know what he is asking about. You need to master the knowledge very well instead of just memorizing equations. GSI is very helpful.

Comment: He's an atrocious professor - has no connection with the class, his exams are almost unrelated to the content he covers, and overall a poor instructor. Also, not particularly good at answering questions/clarifying. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

Comment: Extremely poor professor: really, avoid at all costs. If you can postpone the class or take another professor, do it. Assignments are standard fare, but he is incomprehensible during lecture, has a horrendous attitude toward students, and his exams are completely unrepresentative of the course material.

Comment: Avoid at all cost. While there are some instructors who are hard, yet worth taking, Givental is not one of them. The biggest complaint is that he does not follow the book at all, his handwriting is indiscernible and his exams are impossible. The average of the second midterm was around 40%. And for all that trouble, one still walks away without too good of a grasp on the material. Avoid!
