Comment: This is a wonderful class for bio majors, and Firestone is a great professor. He really tries to get you to think about the concepts, no memorization as all exams are fully open note. This class has made me more passionate about hormonal pathways and research, and I found that it was very interesting. Firestone can get a little rambly during lecture, but your GSI should clear everything up in discussion and review sessions. They were all very generous with grading. Again, big emphasis on actually learning and understanding, and I'd highly recommend this class!

Comment: Firestone is one of the best professors I have had in my two years at Cal! After the mayhem that was Dillin's section, Firestone was a breath of fresh air. If you learn by visual and/or memorization-based methods, you can succeed in his section. Firestone provides a reader for his section; buy it. It has all the diagrams he will draw in class and is great for taking notes on. I studied mostly from the reader and got a very high score on the final exam (and his section therein). Firestone is engaging, funny, and clear in his lectures; he even reviews old material for 5-15 minutes at the start of EVERY lecture! In office hours, Firestone was helpful, often reciting his lines from lecture word-for-word, but did sometimes come off a little condescending. Exam is really easy, very clear memorization questions (ex: "the spermatogonia cell produced after the first meiotic division is the _____?"). Overall, I really enjoyed Firestone as an instructor and loved getting to know him more through office hours. His section saved my grade from a B to an A- in the course, and he gave me a love for physiology that will stay with me through the rest of my MCB career. Truly, one of the best professors you will likely experience in your science lower-division courses.

Comment: By far the most fair out of the three professors, his exams are COMPLETELY lecture based, even if the reader might have extra material. He is also pretty entertaining and does not put you to sleep like Doudna does. You can tell he really tries to interact with the students as well and is generally the best out of the three. His section was the most fun in terms of content and in terms of exams.

Comment: The best of the three. His part of the final was about 60% of it and it was so refreshingly straightforward. Not a single trick question. Great instructor.

Comment: I really enjoyed Professor Firestone's portion of the class. He has a reader that's REALLY helpful so I definitely recommend buying it. He didn't require iClicker so most of the class didn't go, but for those that did go, he would remember your name if you asked more than 3 questions in class. While this was pretty cool of him, we got some people who would ask some really stupid and idiotic questions just for the same of asking a question. Physiology made up about 50% of the insanely long final exam but his questions weren't too difficult if you put in the time to study.

Comment: Firestone was the best instructor out of all of them. You can see how passionate he is about the material. He is always concerned about his students and their questions. Many of the lectures would have a good 15 minutes worth of questions. His exam (part of the final) was straight forward if you studied.
