Comment: I really enjoyed having Doudna; being in Bio 1A with her during Spring '15 was particularly special, since all of her CRISPR/Cas9 and Nobel Prize announcements were coming out while the course was happening. As an instructor, she is engaging. Biochem is droll for a lot of students (though not myself!), so she inserted a lot of real-world and human biological examples of biochemical phenomenons. Doudna provides a course reader, though I never purchased it since it's just her slides that she uses in lecture and posts online. I got an A- on her first exam and could certainly have studied harder, I feel like I retained most of her exam information from AP Biology in high school. Definitely know all of the numbers of input and output molecules for all the respiration and photosynthetic processes and cycles, she likes testing those. Her exam this semester was particularly tricky, but she has a habit of repeating old exam questions, so definitely do those! She also writes problem sets, but they're easier than the exams and don't have keys. Overall a good professor, not superb for definitely effective for learning. A really passionate and fascinating woman in office hours.

Comment: She was REALLY straightforward, but also extremely boring. Her exams are really fair, they are STRAIGHT out of her reader/lectures. A lot of people definitely disliked her because she was dry and, since she had iclickers, you HAD to go to all the 8 am lectures, which definitely sucked. The iclicker qs weren't necessarily off the lecture material (she had assigned reading too), but sometimes they were and they counted for points based off accuracy.

Comment: Brilliant woman, with fairly dry lectures. Exams can be tricky but very straightforward. Go over old exams because she recycles 80% of the questions.

Comment: She was definitely the most organized of the three Bio 1A lecturers for Spring 2013, and I thought that her slides were helpful for not only understanding material in class but also for reviewing later. In addition, her optional problem sets were a great way to review for the midterm and final.

Comment: *Sigh* I honestly don't have much to say about this class other than they should abolish it as a requirement for ChemE's. Its ridiculous that we should have to compete with pre-meds when for some of them, this is the hardest class they will take, when we have other more pressing courses to worry about. Had Doudna, Patel, and Firestone for spring 2013. The lectures from all 3 professors were a bit dry, but that's the nature of the Bio 1A material. Midterm 1 was fair, but midterm II was ridiculous. Can't expect us to do all those damn genetics problem on top of the other questions in an hour. Especially if you're a bad test-taker like me, its reallllly frustrating when you understand the material but don't have time to think about anything in a midterm. The final was LONG ~190 multiple choice questions. The mental toll it takes on you is amazing. I'd rather take a ChemE final. At least you can get partial credit in chemE exams.... I never found multiple choice exams a good way to test knowledge. Basically tests you're guessing ability...But I suppose its impractical to have people grade 500+ free response exams. The material is not conceptually hard to understand, its actually reasonably straight-forward. Just those damn midterms are incredibly frustrating :( Oh well, I'm done with class and thats what counts. Good luck, and god have mercy on your soul if you ever have to compete with as many pre-meds there are in this class...

Comment: I like Doudna's module the best out of the three. Her slides were organized and included the broad area of topics that we needed to know. Although she her exam was the trickiest, I liked the fact that she reused a lot of her past questions with little twists in them. Overall, a great instructor.
