Comment: Condescending and shriveled up old man. Feels the need to bring down the morale and grades and GPA of his students just to compensate for the fact that he doesn't have a PHD. Also hates on pre-meds...most likely because he couldn't do it himself. His grading policy and procedure is beyond messed up and this class in general taught me very little. It's worth more than your blood, sweat, and tears just for a measly 2 units.

Comment: Even if his instruction material was alright, his voice just kills it all. Could not bare sitting for a lecture listening to him.

Comment: Meighan's voice is very annoying, and his attitude and rushed style of speaking can make listening to him difficult. I found it helpful to go to lecture though during the second section, because he points out a lot of the body structures you need to know. The tests were difficult, but once you "get" it after studying A LOT you can do well. I did way better than I expected going into this class. I didn't go to office hours, but I asked a lot of questions during lab. Dissections were hard for me, because I don't like dead animals, and I actually had some nightmares about the rat. My GSI gave very easy quizzes comparatively, and I thought the curve would hurt me, but it didn't. Study a lot, and it is manageable.

Comment: Meighan is utterly useless for this class other than for the study resources he gives you (aka past midterms and exams). I never went to lecture or watched the webcast after maybe the first 3 times, and just went through the lab manual for quizzes. Towards the end I barely skimmed the manual because I was so worn out from this class. It should be worth a lot more than 2 units for the amount of work it requires you to do (or you choose not to do it). For exams, ALL you need is the past exams. you dont need the lab manual at all, so just don't study from it. there is too much material to cover. I guess the other good thing about Meighan is that he lacks creativity to continue being a dick about his exams. The first exam I thought was a lot easier than the second, although cramming the night before for the second probably wasnt such a great idea. However, his grading scheme rewards you more for doing better on the first exam than the second so study hard for the first one. Also, he has a weird grading scheme where sections are pitted against each other to do well, so pray to the gods that your section is smart!

Comment: The class is very difficult, but Meighan is not as bad as everyone says. His lectures were helpful. I am not sure why people are saying that he is a bad lecturer, because if you read the lab manual and watch the lecture webcasts, you should be fine. His lab exam reader with old exams to practice with was helpful, but his first lab exam was still way harder than I had expected. The second lab exam was more straightforward if you studied hard for it, and did the practice exams. Both exams are curved. Quizzes depend on your GSI and are also curved, but they are usually really hard. There was way too much work for a 2-unit class! The pre-labs and post-labs don't count towards your grade, but you still have to do them.

Comment: Despite his reputation, I thought that Meighan was incredibly helpful in that he provided plenty of examples, resources, and time to help students do well on the exams. The material itself is a lot and it is difficult, so obviously he cannot cover everything within lecture. I think that despite the constraints of the class, he did a very good job of presenting the information and constructing exams that are fair.

Comment: I think it's unfair how Mike Meighan has a bad reputation. He is very fair with grades and his exams. While he may not be the best lecturer, he provides plenty of resources and office hours so that you can succeed. Just study hard and you should be fine!

Comment: Do the practice exams and keep up with the readings for each week and you'll be fine...Meighan does a good job of explaining genetics.
