Comment: At first I didn't really understand why all the negative comments for him. This class (felt more like a class than a seminar) was taught really well in such a short amount of time and I learned a great deal in both theoretical and practical concepts. But you need to know your basics. Topics like SVD, matrix algebra, time series, etc. come up very quickly and the professor sometimes rushes through these expecting that you know them at a fundamental level (though we did spend a decent chunk on time-series). I struggled a lot but that was because I hadn't taken courses with these topics yet so I had to learn most of them myself. I think another difficulty lies in the fact that he doesn't write down all his steps when working through problems or proofs which makes it easy to get lost in. But I feel like he is trying hard to figure out how to teach, and as long as you aren't afraid to ask questions in class or in OH you should be fine. Exams were very very reasonable and the oral exam was not very intimidating nor difficult. Homeworks were all over the place in terms of difficulty and time (you could easily spend 15 hours one week and then 1 hour the next) but somehow these matched well with my weaknesses and I learned an immense amount while going through his problems. Very good class if you want to get into the technical side of finance. His goal from the beginning was to prepare you for a technical interview and I think he succeeded in doing that (for me).

Comment: Exams were straight-forward, but man was this guy terrible to listen to! I made an attempt to go to every lecture, but every time I came out I was more confused than when I walked in. That's not to say that you shouldn't go, however, since he covers things that were slightly different than the book, so it was still a good idea to go and see what he would be covering. However, my GSI was still a ton more helpful than el Karoui ever was.

Comment: Hands down worst class I've taken at Berkeley. Didn't go to more than 2 lectures because they were completely useless. Just study from the book/do the homework. I got an A but I've taken stats before. If I hadn't, I'm sure I'd be as lost as everyone else. Tests are really not that hard but we haven't been taught how to do the stuff so it comes down to how well you studied on your own. I would avoid this class if you can. Also my GSI was not very good either.

Comment: His exams appear to be extremely difficult based on the materials you learn in class. He's a horrible lecturer and expect his students to know what he knows while not teaching or even mentioning such information in class.

Comment: Really Hard Class. Professor speaks in a French accent, which makes 2 hr, 8 am lecture even more unbearable. He also has funny handwriting, and his own notations, so you have to learn to get used to them to know what he's writing on the board. His hw assignments are pretty easy compared to his midterm and final. But the good thing is if you do better on your Final, then it can override your Midterm grade. Study Group is KEY for surviving this class. If you don't need to take it, then take Stats 2, way easier.
