Comment: Ultra-high workload class that ultimately teaches you a lot about applied statistics. Yu presents statistical theory and methodology in lecture. The lab assignments use real data problems from past research papers to give students hands-on practice with the concepts taught in the past 2 weeks. Lab assignments are drawn from a variety of fields. The five assignments this semester spanned fields of plant biology, linguistics, political science, remote sensing, and neuroscience. It was a lot of fun doing these labs and learning a bit about these different fields, though the assignments took forever. Be sure you have enough time if you plan on taking this class. Also, I wish Yu could be a bit more clear in her lecturing. She should think more carefully about how to make research level statistical material comprehensible to beginning graduate students and not just write things down on the board. I think vast majority of the class didn't understand some of the later concepts, eg. minimal description length.
