Comment: I remember my time with Joe. Anyway, 186 is supposed to be a "useful" class. Databases are pretty much rampant in the world now, so it would be a good idea to familiarize oneself with them. However, this class is not the best way to do that. Hellerstein as a lecturer seemed fairly underprepared. I never really got the feeling that the course was headed anywhere, it just seemed so meandering. Some of the projects were pretty cool as others have expressed, however the d3 one was completely pointless. Piazza was pretty helpful for this course. I'm not sure if that was due to the students or due to Hellerstein himself, but I pretty much abused it to get the projects done. The exams were pretty whatever. All in all this class was pretty whatever. I at least learned how SQL works!

Comment: 186 is a very useful class to take and goes a lot beyond just learning SQL. In fact, I would say it's the most useful CS upper division class to take if you plan on going into industry. Although the content is good, the class overall was just ok. There were 5 projects. Project 1 was about wrangling raw data into clean formats and Project 5 was about using Javascript for data visualization (pretty worthless assignments imo). Projects 2 and 4 involved extending small portions of Apache Spark internals and Project 3 was about SQL, so those were more useful. The projects overall weren't too difficult or time consuming. The professor doesn't do a very good job teaching. He said he threw together the slides the night before for most lectures, and spoke very fast and went on tangents while the slides were walls of text. Even though the content wasn't very challenging, it made the class unnecessarily difficult because the course staff didn't seem too invested in teaching us the material as well as they could. Exams were pretty straightforward, but would have been easier if the content was explained better. The grading distribution was lenient and I got a solid A without putting a ton of effort in the class. I learned a lot in this class and would recommend anyone planning on entering industry to take this class with Hellerstein, but there's still a lot of room for improvement.

Comment: I'm feeling very meh about this class. The material is "useful," especially since databases are used everywhere, but it's just not taught in an engaging way. Lectures were not always clear and were quite boring. It was also apparent several times that Hellerstein hadn't gone over the lecture beforehand - he'd get tripped up over something and he'd have to pause and think about it. The assignments were also pretty useless. To be clear: the class is very easy and light-workload. But I learned almost nothing from the assignments. Just about the only useful assignment was where we got to practice SQL. The tests were very straight-forward, but this meant they were also somewhat nitpicky (easy to mess up a calculation for).

Comment: Very enthusiastic and clear. The projects are kind of hard to go straight into, though.

Comment: The class was an 8AM, but he would play music as people walked into class which made things a little more interesting.
