Ratings for Manz, B
Based on 8 ratings for this instructor.
Comment: THIS RATING IS NOT OF PR MANZ. I am rating the course overall. This class is going to take most of your time. Besides the weekly readings [a ton], you are going to receive 10s of notifications weekly asking you to read an article or watch a movie. The entire grade is based on 2 midterms and 1 final. The questions on the exam can be extremely specific [something like 1 opinion in one of the of the 20 assigned articles]. This course has no room for personal opinion/argument when answering the question. It all comes down to MEMORIZING. If you are good at memorizing huge amount of information and spending 15+ hours a week on this one class, then go for it. P.S. Albert Einstein — 'Never memorize something that you can look up.'

Comment: manz is completely boring and it isimpossible to pay attention when she talks. when shaiken lectures, it is more enjoyable. grading on the exams are subjective, and alot of unnecessary readings.

Comment: The material for this class is very interesting and completely relevant for our time in terms of immigration and current events. Lecture is an hour and a half and sometimes gets a bit boring. The course gets much more interesting as it progresses. Manz is knowledgeable but such a boring lecturer, I could not stay awake when she talked, seemed like most of the class was in the same boat as me. She too brings in friends (aka world leaders) from across the world for lectures. Readings can be a bit dull some are incredibly fascinating and eye opening. The reader came from Copy Central on Bancroft, the other books can be found on their websitehttp://southernborder.berkeley.edu/. Discussions are not mandatory, there are review sessions before each of the three exams that make up your final grade. They are very helpful attend these sessions! Exams are fairly easy as long as you attend lecture and skim through the reading.
