Comment: Kinda boring professor, but definitely cares about the class. He's pretty helpful and his lectures are pretty easy to follow. Homework I felt didn't do that great of a job to help with understanding the material, but I think that can change. Exams were HARD though

Comment: 61B is definitely a harder class than 61A in terms of time required for projects and homework, but I enjoyed the course material in 61B much more than I did in 61A. Shewchuk is an outstanding professor. The fact that he chooses to do his lectures by hand rather than a powerpoint (like 61A and 61C) is commendable. His humor is a bit different but he's pretty funny and makes an effort to lighten the mood in lecture. His pace may be considered "slow" but that just means its easier to keep up with the class, which is nice. Projects were decent, Project 1 was short and relatively frustrating (blurring images / edge detection). Project 2 (networks) was really interesting and you start with no code, so it takes a good amount of work but Shewchuk gave 3-4 weeks for the project. Project 3 was pretty easy, enforced good concepts. Homeworks were straightforward and simple. Awesome class, take it with Shewchuk if you can.

Comment: My favorite professor at Cal so far, though Garcia may give him a run for his money. Classwork and lecture topics are well organized and easy to learn intuitively. Lecture notes are concise and made available and cover nearly every topic that appears on test and homework, letting you review easily or browse before lecture so you get an idea of what to expect. A course reader was available for cheap. This was by far the best resource for studying. Tons of past exams in it which made it easy to practice and figure out how he likes to setup exams and what sort of questions typically show up. If you can't figure something out, he was very active on Piazza along with the rest of the class. Projects were fun, Network in particular was extensive though. Plan ahead, especially if you've got dead weight in your group, but grading was pretty generous and it was a great experience to plan and build from the ground up for them. Exams were difficult enough, but quite doable if you've practiced. Time was a bit short on the midterms, but the final was easy to complete, it felt like taking the SAT, both in ease, and time constraint. A bit eccentric, and surprisingly funny, delivered some great jokes out of the blue.

Comment: Shewchuck is the best! He knows so much about the material and doesn't lecture from powerpoints but takes the time to write out everything so you can take your time really understanding the material in lecture and not have to teach yourself like you have to do with so many other CS classes here. His assignments were really fun and fairly graded. His late policy is SO GENEROUS! Take a class with him if you can, we will make you appreciate the subject so much more!

Comment: He's a dull lecturer, but lectures are straightforward and helpful. Labs are pretty easy, but homework is hard. Projects aren't graded until late in the semester, so be ready for that.
