Comment: Great class! Learned so much from this class, and Professor Johns knows so much about the material. Also, I was taking it P/NP, so it was also very chill. Would highly recommend as an AC class.

Comment: Professor Johns is an incredible professor. He never uses power points or anything but simply talks from his head and could go on for hours. I was amazed at how much he was able to recall and teach without notes or slides to help. There are no assignments in this class other than the midterm and final which are two essays worth 60% and 40% of your grade. Some of the books are interesting novels but you don't really have to read them.

Comment: The class itself was more boring than I thought it would be, not because of the content but because Professor Johns wasn't very engaging, in my opinion. He spent most of the lecture talking without asking much input from students. There was no homework other than the readings, which while they oftentimes reinforced ideas from class, were in no way necessary or very interesting. I'm not sure how to feel about the fact that our grade was only based off 2 papers - it was nice in some ways but also made it hard to get a good grade. I think Professor Johns is a great guy with a great sense of humor and he was quite willing to help at office hours, but I wish he put more effort into teaching a more engaging class.

Comment: I definitely regret taking this pass/no pass. Material is very interesting and lots of the knowledge can be found on your own if you take the time to absorb the world around you. Professor Johns knows his stuff and although I never went to office hours (nor did any of the readings), I would assume that he would be a great help. Entire class is based off of 2 papers, which are very easy. Go to lecture and you should have no problem.

Comment: Prof. Johns is extremely knowledgeable and witty. Seriously, just go to his lectures and you'll be fine. There are no assignments in class (you can choose not to read the books assigned and still do fine), only a mid-term (max. 15 page paper) and a final (max. 10 page paper).

Comment: Professor Johns is funny in the sense that he's bluntly honest. The material itself is not much different from the US History seen in high school. There's only one take home midterm and final and no homework.

Comment: I knew next to nothing about the American urban experience before taking this class and I walked away learning a lot! Prof Johns is articulate, witty, and so knowledgeable- never lectures from notes, i.e. go to lecture. It's a mix of geography, history, culture, and philosophy based on novels. Work hard for getting an A but totally attainable. Go to office hours- he makes a real effort to know his students! It was a pleasure to take this class.

Comment: Although the lectures were fascinating and Johns is rarely, if ever, a bore, I am rather disappointed with the course. There are only two incredibly vague assignments that comprise your final grade, the first midterm paper (worth 60%) and the final paper (worth 40%). Johns announced that he would not be having office hours the week or two preceding the first paper. The reason for this is still baffling to me. He never explicitly stated the rationale behind his decision, but he did mention in class that it would not be fair to have office hours before a paper. Considering this paper was worth 60% of our grade, I would think that being available to one's students would be imperative. In any case, both assignments were graded quite harshly by a mystery GSI whom we never met. In addition, we were not provided with the GSI's email or even his/her name! It kills me a little to write a poor interview for a class I enjoyed so much, but there are some serious kinks in this course that need to be worked out.
