Comment: GREAT lecturer, but assignments were rather random. Easy pass/not pass AC for an engineer: while there are required readings, they aren't really emphasized in assignments or in the course at all. Really makes you appreciate and learn about California culture.

Comment: Sat in the front row of his class every lecture. He has a way of going through lectures like stories. He weaves them all together, and it flows very well, leaving you on a cliffhanger every day, and hungering for the next chapter. I had a great time in his class. There were NO midterms. Just papers, which proved very challenging if your historical analysis isn't so good.

Comment: AMAZING lecturer. Really makes you appreciate California history and how the state came to be what it is today. His assignments are kind of annoying though because they don't really relate to what he lectures on.

Comment: best professor I've ever had!!! His lectures are simply amazing and I never skipped any! He makes his class so interesting and fascinating, and I'm an engineering major, so I hated history before taking this class Take this class for AC requirement!

Comment: Mixed feelings about this class. Professor Klein is an amazing lecturer. He is very clear and his lectures are entertaining and interesting. However, I really REALLY disliked the assignments. In addition to the final there were three papers. While the papers were useful writing exercises, they were not relevant to the course material. Since a lot of students taking the class are science majors looking for an upper div humanities class to satisfy breadth, I can see why he wanted to design assignments that focused on structuring essays. And since we didn't have a midterm and the papers didn't allow us to analyze course material, we had to study and review a semester's worth of notes for the final for the first time. Overwhelming. Definitely take this class if you're interested in Western United States history or a science major looking for an upper div humanities course. If you are a history major I would think twice before taking this class. And I reiterate again that Professor Klein is a great lecturer.
