Comment: So far my favorite class at Cal. Super quick and easy homeworks, easy midterm and final, 3 short and simple essays. Prof. Johnson was great, it seemed like he didn't really care how much work you put in, only that you enjoy yourself learning a little bit about linguistics. I talked so much about ling that semester that some of my friends still think it's my major. He had a lot of interesting personal experiences to share about the material =)

Comment: Love this class! The comment below already gave a lot of details about the structure of the class. Basically, the class is well structured, if you read the chapter, do the assignments, write the essays (which can be rewritten for a higher grade), and spend some time studying for midterm and final, you will definitely ace the class. The professor is super nice, the GSIs are always helpful during office hours. Highly recommend! P.S. made an account on ninja courses just to comment about how good this class is haha

Comment: This survey of linguistics with Professor Johnson is a very well structured. Johnson is an engaging lecturer and gladly welcomes questions in class. He uses a lot of personal anecdotes and loves the chapters on phonetics and phonology as that’s his area of expertise (he’s written his own textbook!). The class itself is very straight-forward and follows the textbook very closely. There are 14 chapters in the book and 14 weeks of instruction (one topic a week) and a respective weekly online quiz. Monday and Wednesday lectures go over the week's chapter and Friday lectures discuss material that won’t be on any test but rather go over studies related to the chapter. ALL lectures are webcast! There are 3 papers of 3-4 pages but you have several prompt options to choose from plus the option to design your own prompt, and essays can be rewritten if you receive below an 9.5/10. The final and the midterm were VERY fair and the questions are of the difficulty but not the specificity of the quizzes. Details aside, I loved this class! Especially the last chapters that went over language acquisition, bilingualism, and the history of English. The class does a great job of giving you a taste of all the different disciplines within linguistics.

Comment: Super chill and lenient, and although most of the actual content wasn't really gone over in class that much, he was fun and jovial so it was worth it whenever I showed up. Assignments and exams are ridiculously easy, basically the only way to do poorly in this class would be to never even open up the book or show up to discussion.

Comment: Prof. Johnson's class was pretty easy. You don't really have to go to class since he posts everything online. HOWEVER, if you choose not to go to class, make sure you actually look over the lecture slides and keep up. It is very easy to just skip and fall far far behind... Assignments were pretty helpful and exams were fair.

Comment: Keith is the coolest professor I've ever had at Berkeley hands down. He is fully aware of how easy and sometimes boring the material is, basically reads off the powerpoints, but adds a little pizaz with some jokes and sass. He's really funny. Easy A if you do the practice quizzes. Sections were kind of pointless, I think he joked about that too.

Comment: I learned a lot taking this class, and the midterms/final were very easy with just a few hours of review. He assigns 3 essays over the semester, and they are generally short (~3 pages). Professor Johnson makes a rather dull topic fairly interesting, and his enthusiasm engaged me in lecture most of the time.

Comment: Really cute professor and a class with an easy A if you go over the textbooks and write essays properly. The best policy is that essays can be rewritten for grade improvement, which is the best class I have ever taken!

Comment: This class was easy and I learned some interesting things about language structure and formation. My GSI Discussion experience wasn't the best, in fact it felt like a waste of time almost always, but that's an experience we'll all go through at one time or another. If you want to learn basics of Linguistics, it's an easy place to start!

Comment: Johnson is one of the best ling professors I've ever had. Although I did okay in the class, I still had a lot of fun. Essentially do your project well and you can still do bad on the tests and pass the class. The midterm and final are graded with little room for error, so study hard for those and just kind of do the homeworks and you'll pass no problem. The material of the course varies so much though, you learn a little about a lot of different areas of linguistics. Worth it for that alone.
