Comment: I honestly don't know if this is the same teacher I encountered in math 121a - certainly didn't match up with the reviews on here! HW was fairly straightforward - right out of the book; lectures were easy to follow too. Then the first MT happened - and I know I was not the only one that did MUCH worse than expected - me + 6 others in the class discussed how bad it was compared to everything we were given to prepare with... with that being said, he is not very helpful at all in OH or just in general. Not passionate about teaching and doesn't seem to care about the students. Stay away!

Comment: Prof. Lin is a great professor. His exams mainly tested for the understanding of lecture concepts and homework. Understanding concepts well and doing enough practice will help you perform better in his exams. His office hours were helpful, and come with questions to help you understand materials.

Comment: This course is totally awesome, but I must say that it is not for everyone. For students who are wondering whether they should take the honors version or not, you should be able to know by the first few lectures. The class started out with some 40-60ish people to about only 20 of them attending lectures. Assignments are worth about 2-3 hrs a week, those are generally not difficult. Exams are not hard at all. The important thing is, you must be able to study 'on your own' to survive this course. Professor Lin might not be the greatest deliverer of knowledge, his lectures might confuse you if you did not go to lecture prepared(i.e.preview the material). However, he definitely knows how to personalize each student's needs. He even slowed the whole syllabus down to accommodate for all. But for ambitious students he also gives them a taste of what math is truly about in upper div.

Comment: Not sure what was the point of having assignments and an exam that had a very low average score for a senior capstone project class. Professor Lin was friendly and helpful during office hours, but the structure of the class was.. dumb.

Comment: Prof Lin is not overtly enthusiastic about his course, but he is extremely knowledgeable, and when he is discussing various topics during class you can see that he really is interested in what he's teaching.

Comment: Do yourself a favor and take this class with Youssefi instead. It's apparent that Prof. Lin knows nothing about SolidWorks, and taught us nothing past the very basics on solidworks simulation, even though we were required to use it. He spent most of the time talking about MEMS, which is the only thing he really knows. He also taught us some optimization techniques, but never went over how to use computer tools to optimize. CAD and optimization-- the two focuses of the class, and nothing was taught on it. Couple that with nonsensical projects with vague grading rubrics and you have yourself a disaster. I should have dropped this class when I had the chance.
