Comment: One of my favorite professors. Super engaging and willing to talk to you outside of class. The material is super interesting, but can also get complex in light of the source material you work with. Understanding the concepts she lectures on is one thing, but understanding them in the context of advertising analysis is another. 3 papers, of which you only have to do 2, which analyze a modern ad through the lens of theories about older advertisements (4-6 pages each). She's a stickler for sticking to the media and not delving into a critique of society, so careful to stay on track with that. Her midterm and final were straightforward, and she gave study guides, so the class was direct, despite the nuanced nature of the material. But overall, wonderful lady, interesting lecturer, and great person. Would recommend.

Comment: interesting material about the formulation of mass media and its various efforts. she's a strict but fair grader. extremely quick lecturer, would ramble at the end of each sentence and just let her voice trail off so it would be difficult to catch all that she was saying while taking notes in class. essays did not seem completely relevant to the class, but were fun.

Comment: Retzinger is not a good professor and doesn't care about how well her students do. She grades way too harshly on exams and assignments. There's no reading her mind. Her lectures are also very slow and she loves to hear herself talk. I dreaded coming to class twice a week and the material was completely useless. I'm so glad I never have to take a class with her again.

Comment: This class was a nightmare and I hated going to class. Yes she's passionate about what she's teaching but the material she talks about is so irrelevant. She's also not very nice when you go to talk to her about the assignments that you graded and she makes you feel like an idiot. Even if you go to her office hours before each assignment to do exactly what she wants, she will still finds ways to bring down your grade. Worst class ever. Don't take it.

Comment: As stated before this class is poorly structured. The assignments are extremely specific and very difficult to manage. Skip lecture, go to section.

Comment: Didn't really enjoy the class, but it wasn't too terrible. Go to your discussion section. Lecture is fairly pointless.

Comment: She includes a lot of text on her power point slides and doesn't give enough time to write things down. Sometimes she includes slides with no text, only pictures. She seems passionate about what she does, but is not very engaging.

Comment: The coursework and readings were fascinating, but the essay assignments were looking for something really hyper-specific, and therefore were very difficult to do even marginally well on. In short: superb class, difficult assignments.

Comment: I thought this class was really unorganized and both the professor and GSIs had no idea what they wanted students to learn. Lectures seemed to wander from topic to topic with no continuity or objective. My GSI sucked balls. He literally had no idea what he wanted as far as answers on exams or papers and made subjective judgments on students' work seemingly based on whether he liked you or not. On top of that, he was the least unclear and unhelpful person I've ever met. He also started the first class by reading aloud what bad things students wrote about him previously on review forms. Who does that? What a weirdo. Not Retzinger's best effort either.

Comment: Retzinger is very passionate about the material and makes it very interesting. Her exams were not that difficult and she provided the keywords that were going to be on the exam before hand. The course doesn't cover how to advertise, but instead historical trends that have defined advertising and how those trends have persisted throughout history.
