Comment: The assignment takes more than 4 hours a week, and with a full lab about 3 hours a week. The 3 unit class uses like about 9 hours a week, and that doesn't count for project and reading the book and the time preparing for the midterm. So, if you have a lot of time. You can decide to take this class.

Comment: HW took too long for what it was worth. The first half of the semester was spent working on autoCAD, which honestly didnt need that long. The last few weeks was spent on solidworks, off the tutorials in the software, which felt cheap. The GSI, Megan, was helpful and fun to work with. McMains was not too fun to work with, she would just say her lecture and then leave never to be seen again until the next lecture.

Comment: Prof. McMains is a good teacher, but the material itself is super tedious and boring (but maybe important). Homeworks take a long time to finish (especially when doing AutoCAD). Exams were alright if you understood the ideas with the homework. The final project took a lot of time, so be prepared for that.

Comment: The most time I've spent for a three unit class. She seems to think that all of her students' lives revolve around this one class, and assigns work accordingly. The homework assignments take hours to finish (make sure you have regular access to a printer) so it's probably a good idea to have your own laptop so that you aren't forced to work in the CAD labs. Spent way too much time with AutoCAD (which is easy to learn), and rushed through SolidWorks (which is far more interesting, but also more difficult). One of the GSIs (Sushrut) is really unfair on grading homeworks, so make sure you check your scores to see if you got all the points you deserved. Midterms were okay and long, and the final was even longer and somewhat unfair. Also the final project had so many steps and things you had to turn in just to prove that you'd been working on it each week. I'd recommend against taking it with this professor.

Comment: This class was, quite honestly, the worst class I've taken at Cal. It's not so much the fault of the instructor as how the class is structured. This class should teach you solid modeling and how to make good engineering drawings, but instead you spend 1/2 of the class learning BS orthogonal projects and color stuff in with colored pencils. Exams were much more difficult than they needed to be and we learned SolidWorks from the tutorials (I paid to be taught via the software itself?). The final project consumed entirely too much time and wasn't worth enough. The final was stupendously difficult as well.

Comment: Lectures are mind-numbingly boring, especially if you have used CAD before. Spends way too much time on details that barely even matter, and is extremely picky on homework and exams. Exams are relatively straightforward, though.
