Comment: His lectures are interesting and informational. His problem sets are horrible. HORRIBLE. Took 15 hours at least per week. However, his exam questions are much more fair, and he gives exam template that really helps. Really liked him as a professor, even tho he wasn't around much for the later half of the course.

Comment: Chandler is a great lecturer and his class is interesting. In class he builds the theoretical framework for solving his hw problems; applying that framework in homework is difficult. Very difficult. Good news is that the exams are much easier than the homeworks. Also, he gives out a template on his exams so you can guess what kind of problems he will ask based upon the question setup. I was able to guess 30-60% of the questions beforehand. Good strategies for this course include getting a large group of people to brainstorm the template and consulting the GSI's, who are superb, on how to solve hw problems. If you look at his past grading distributions, he mostly gives A's and B's! So keep that in mind when you feel like you are failing the course because of the difficulty of his homeworks.

Comment: HW are Impossible to do. I spent literally 2-3 times as long on DC's assignments than 120A assignments. Luckily the HW is 50% completion but even then, it sucks. He gave you an exam template so you basically have to guess what is on the exam. His lecture is not understandable as he doesn't explain much and he doesn't tell you what it means. His derivation is a little sketchy. His curve is very generous.

Comment: The HW assignments are extremely long and difficult. Usually it takes almost one week to finish it. Working with classmates together seems to be the "only" strategy. The instructor is passionate about the material.

Comment: Chandler is a phenom at teaching, though his ease with the material leads him to skip a crucial math step here or there. This can usually be cleared up by asking him or the GSIs what happened. Problem sets are assigned every single week (with maybe one or two exceptions) and are, without exception, completely demoralizing. Regular attendance at office hours and discussion is absolutely needed. Exams are fair, and a template for the exam is given in advance to give everyone a fighting chance. If you don't spend a good amount of time on this with other people, you will likely not have a fighting chance on the exam. The problem sets are infinitely harder than the exams, so don't worry about that too much. This class will overhaul your understanding of chemistry if you put the work into it. Highly recommended!

Comment: Chandler will try to make this class consume your life. Problem sets take probably 20-25 hours to complete on average, and there's one almost every week. He gives you templates for the midterm and the final which make the midterms feel like they're just three days long, although they can be pretty helpful. Very generous curve at the end, but classes really don't get much harder than this.

Comment: Not nearly as bad as some people out there say he is. Chandler does actually care about his students and is a very enthusiastic lecturer. His lectures are fairly organized, although his constant step-skipping on derivations detracts from the material. His problem sets are very long, but you learn a lot from them. The main complaint I had was that he never let us up for air--we constantly had a problem set due each week, even after the midterms. Towards the end, a lot of us got burned out from the constant problem sets. exams were fair.
