Ratings for Winickoff, D E

Comment: The course material is extremely relevant to today's problems, but Winickoff's lectures are pretty dry. He just talks at you. If you raise your hand, he expects a lot, so be warned. If you take the challenge, he really makes you think. The midterms were way too nit-picky, so he gave us a holistic final. I don't understand the change in his rationale now, since he 's been teaching this course for years.

Comment: He's one of the more boring professors I have had. The way he lectures induces sleep...That said, he has the feel of a standard college (stereotypical) professor, with "meh" lectures (previous comments said a lot of group discussions, which were good and bad; i feel overall they were a negative aspect), reasonable assignments and reading lengths. He somehow never got his exams straightforward - of the 2 quizzes, 1 midterm, and final, they all had different formats which i disliked much because it doesn't let the students adapt / know what he's looking for, what his style is in deciding grades.

Comment: The only reason I took this course is because it satisfied my upper division, ethics, and series requirements all with one class. It's pretty straightforward. Lectures are often powerpoint and not very effective at conveying the main points. The readings can get pretty dense but the weekly section assignments are easy. Exams are also straightforward. I learned a lot, but it was mainly from my GSI, who had this habit of making snarky comments about scientists and engineers. He was funny. I think a lot of people hated him though, but that might have just been because of his goatee. I think he hated us too because most of us just sat really still during discussion and answered his questions with blank stares and grimaces.

Comment: The (assistant) professor knew the material pretty well but wasn't very clear in explaining concepts. He sometimes lectured with run-on sentences so you would be pretty confused as he tried to explain a concept. Lecture was very boring and put most people (if they showed up to lecture) to sleep. Tried to make the lecture a big discussion section were everyone would discuss with each other but that didn't really work out since not that many people participated. A lot of reading for the class and weekly 1 page assignments due during in your discussion section. Midterm and final exam were somewhat difficult but he provided a rough outline of what was expected to be on the exams.
