Comment: Fantastic professor. Creates a sense of community in his classroom and is always willing to help with analysis of passages. Tough grader but will help you throughout the writing process. Will assign passage analysis as homework but there is never enough time to go through everybody's (usually the whole class just picks through one or two peoples analysis), so it is not always necessary to do the homework. Assigns a lot of reading in a short period of time.

Comment: Shy is a great person and instructor. He encourages class discussion in a way that is not forceful, but makes one feel comfortable of experessing his/her ideas and thoughts. The course was challenging but had evidently positive results. The books covered a wide range of India's history and the discussions we held in class went beyond analyzing the text, for it helped develop solid reasoning skills. Although it would have been even better if he hold OH, the discussions we had in class made up for it. Also, his personality is superb- more of a friend than an instructor! I encourage you to take this or any of his other classes!

Comment: Totally cool instructor. Shy is so passionate on the matter of literature and so much else. He really pushes his students. His experience and his interests, as well as his knowledge on so many matters, contributes to the class overall. However, he's not very helpful -- he responds to your e-mails rarely if not ever, and did not hold office hours (at least not during fall 2011). You can see why it would've been hard to improve as a writer because of this.
