Comment: He picks great readings and he's very excited about his work, but he would make a better curator of a private collection than a professor. Every lecture is an extensive, repetitive, formal analysis of artworks he specifically chooses that support his argument about 19th century art and technology. Frequently lectures just repeat the reading. Awkwardly tries to field student participation, never works, because everyone's bored/not really paying attention. Tried to teach vision science--did not understand the material he was teaching himself, material ended up irrelevant to art history. Case studies from week to week do not seem to relate to each other. Lectures are repetitive--its always some superficial discussion about perception vs. reality. Readings are insightful and interesting...but I gained nothing listening to the professor himself. Could have been a great class. Really quite disappointing. Brought in a magician to do magic tricks once though...that was pretty useless but quite a lot of fun!
