Ratings for Gronsky, R
Based on 114 ratings for this instructor.
Comment: Gronsky's enthusiasm and helpfulness are practically unbeatable-- he'll talk through questions for 10+ minutes after lecture. Lab reports were annoying, but the repetition has actually helped me crank out similar assignments very quickly now.

Comment: Easily one of the best profs I had at Berkeley. His lectures are clear and you can learn a lot. His HW is annoying due to formatting...Tests are basically all conceptual and hard. He said he was going to retire and I felt really lucky and happy to take E45 with him. GRONSKY IS THE BEST.

Comment: Kind of pointless to rate him now since he is retiring this year but I would have to agree with most other people, Gronsky is a great professor if you listen to his lectures and an even better person. Exams are based largely on lectures. High workload but he drastically raises the curve because of this. He was one of the few professors who has actually taken the time to understand the position students are in. He understands engineering students' lives and stresses and his attitudes and teaching reflects this.

Comment: Easily the best professor that I've had at Cal. The problem is, there's only so much he can cover in a 50-minute lecture. I'd recommend recording his lectures and taking pictures of the diagrams he draws and the slides he puts up, because he tries to get through a lot of material in a short amount of time and you can fall behind pretty quickly. He's receptive to questions despite the time constraint, and just a nice guy in general as well. The problem sets feel like busy work a lot of the time, but I thought his formatting requirements were actually quite helpful for future engineering training. Exams are entirely conceptual (almost no calculations) and quite long, so hurry through them.

Comment: Gronsky is a great and engaging lecturer. He is incredibly clear and also has these interesting anecdotes related to the subject material. The grading scheme is very lenient - 20% HW, 30% labs, 20% midterms, 30% final, so only 50% total tests. HW felt very disconnected from lecture. His OH were packed on Fridays with students asking for help on assignments. Labs were actually easier than E45 labs. Midterm were fair. Final was very unrelated to what was covered in lecture -- it focused on stuff we talked only for 15 minutes about. Overall, a good class that I learned a ton from.

Comment: This class was weird in that the lectures and presentation style were very good, but homework assignments more often than not covered material that we hadn't gone over in class, and bear no resemblance to exams at all. It was just hard to know what to expect. The lab section is pretty good though, it's just that the lab reports took me forever to do (although they're not graded as harshly as the E45 reports). Gronsky is a great teacher and enthusiastic lecturer overall, but the problem sets and exams left me feeling a bit annoyed with him.
