Ratings for Eigen, K A

Comment: Though the topics covered in the class are interesting, Professor Eigen does a pretty poor job in teaching them. In fact, she said herself that her specialty was 19th century history and that she was new to the time period. This was made apparent in her at times very basic summaries of events that merited far more in depth coverage and analysis. She is also a very poor speaker and often stumbles over her words. On the bright side, there are relatively few assignments in the class and the exams are fairly straightforward. The amount of assigned reading is fairly small, though she rarely references the readings in her lectures. She did attempt to compensate for this by holding class discussion but with hundreds of students in a class, this turned out to be very unproductive and unenlightening. Perhaps the poor quality of the course is reflective of UC Berkeley's decision to give her the class knowing that she did not have much prior background on the time period. Nevertheless, I would not recommend taking this class from her. If you really are interested in the time period, take the course from someone else.
