Ratings for Brashares, J S
Based on 10 ratings for this instructor.
Comment: Brashares was enthusiastic, clear, organized and his exams were extremely fair. I thought the class was boring but I'm not really interested in ecology. As long as you memorize everything on the slides - you'll be fine. Also, he loves graphs. Know the graphs. Be the graphs.

Comment: Brashares is very engaging and funny. His exams are fair if you take the time to review all of the course material, particularly the graphs, and the weekly quizzes are a piece of cake if you just set aside 10-15 minutes to read or skim the articles. The problem sets and field project were a little long and required some critical thinking, but they are very manageable and teach you invaluable skills like basic GIS. He also offers several extra credit opportunities and section activities were the most engaging I've had at Cal. Definitely consider this course if you are interested in animals and ecology, but don't expect an easy A.

Comment: Clear presentations, good humor, interesting material, and he actually cares. Lectures are all webcasted but he makes you WANT to attend lectures anyway. Exams were easy as long as you understood his slides. Quizzes in discussions were very easy. Awesome class, awesome prof. I learned so much. If you have any trace of interest in ecology, animals, bio, the environment, the earth, TAKE THIS CLASS.

Comment: Brashares is very nice and enthusiastic. However, his lectures are pretty slow-paced and don't cover much material. He's a very harsh grader even though his exams don't cover difficult material, so you'll probably leave exams with a lower grade than you think you deserve. Problem sets weren't very exciting and suffer the same grading problem as the exams. Doing the field project, however, was fun and useful.

Comment: Lectures were interesting, and each one started with a video relating to the lecture's material. Prof. Brashares was interesting to listen to, and his jokes made coming to lecture worthwhile. The tests were specific and looked for a fair amount of detail, which didn't seem to correspond with how laid back lecture was, even though all the material was mentioned at some point in time. There were three major assignments, none of which were difficult, and short quizzes in section each week.

Comment: Brashares was my first ESPM upper div professor, and he was just dope. He was very enthusiastic, funny (in a dorky way), and taught many basic, yet interesting concepts. The exams were surprisingly easy, as long as you studied his lecture notes. The GSIs were all very friendly and helpful. Did I mention discussion was actually FUN? I didn't believe that could happen in Berkeley.

Comment: Great lecturer and very entertaining. Material is not difficult, just go over the slides and you'll do fine on his exams. Exams are non-cumulative and the final is the 3rd midterm. Awesome class.
