Comment: This class was relatively easy but was not very enjoyable. Lectures put me to sleep. Hirschkind pretty much stood up there and talked about whatever crossed his mind at the time. There was very little structure and the class was extremely disorganized (something I despise). Midterm and final were pretty easy but graded very inconsistently depending on GSI. My GSI graded considerably harder than my friend's GSI which was frustrating. The ethnographic research paper was somewhat interesting but more so pointless and a waste of time. Discussion section was also terrible.

Comment: I don't think Hirschkind explained the concepts all that well, nor was he that engaging. However, there were only two assignments (one big ethnography and a smaller response paper) and he gives you almost the exact questions on the midterm/final, so reasonably anyone can do well if you read the 50+ pages a week...

Comment: It was a very complicated and in-depth course. More philosophical than I was used to. Very discussion-based. Be prepared, but the material is life changing and I learned a lot.

Comment: I enjoyed his class, but I would only recommend taking it if you're actually vaguely interested in the material. I found the readings interesting, although they are definitely dense, and the main project was a cool experiment although it was quite a bit of work. If you do the readings and start early on the projects, the class is not bad at all. He provides a fairly comprehensive study guide for the midterm and final, which help out a lot. Not a very strong lecturer, but definitely passionate about his subject. Overall if you're interested, you should take it! GSI definitely made all the difference for me, go to discussion!

Comment: His class was a great class to take as an AC requirement course. Keeping up with readings as well as going to lecture really helps out. His research paper was easy and the final exam was not bad at all! Recommend Hirschkind as an instructor!
