Comment: This class was a great introduction to the nature of U.S. foreign policy towards Asia-Pacific region. It was very informative and engaging. It was my favorite class this semester and I highly recommend it.

Comment: Pempel is an amazing professor. He's a world-renowned expert on Japanese politics, but he's still open to suggestions and different viewpoints in class. The class is really well taught, but there are pop quizzes, which can throw you off. Your grade is based on section participation, 3-5 pop quizzes, one paper, two midterms, and one final. For the exams he gives you a pretty clear study guide, but they are so long that most people spend up until the last minute writing (no multiple choice). If you can weather the occasional pop quiz and long tests, Pempel is great teacher who loves his subject. Oh, he also doesn't post lecture notes, so you HAVE to go to every class. It's worth it though especially when he starts talking about current Japanese politics and how that relates to the rest of the course.
