Comment: This is the class for you if you walk in as an expert in Sanskrit, Finnish, Latin, Old English, and other Indo-European languages and their proto-languages. However, for the rest of us, it was quite overwhelming, as the professor kind of expected us to know things about these languages... The assignments were mostly alright, but were graded pretty harshly. Everything in this class was graded pretty harshly. Midterm 2 was terrible because it asked you to produce so many terms instead of actually solving problems... Professor's lectures are boring and pretty much useless, as he just goes off the handouts. I just read the textbook and learned mainly from section. I don't like how the textbook literally does not include any Asian languages whatsoever, but I did like the fact that our GSI brought in some Japanese examples. This class has the potential to be a great class, but there needs to be some changes for sure.

Comment: I was going to take this class as an easy breadth class for a letter grade, but I realized that I would be lucky to get a B so I switched to P/NP. His lectures were extremely boring, and I didn't retain anything from the lectures. The homework assignments are fairly difficult, and the only positive aspect about them was that he only grades homework based on completion. Moreover, the exams were difficult to study for because I was just cramming facts that I did not understand. The exam itself was okay, but some of the questions were difficult to answer because I just didn't know them. There was no curve for the midterm or final, and I think the average for the midterm was a C. I suppose the class wasn't horrible to fulfill a breadth class, but it wasn't what I was expecting. I feel that there are easier (and much more interesting) classes out there.

Comment: Holland was a bit of a nightmare. He is smart, knows what he talks about and is enthusiastic. That is about it though. He is condescending towards students who ask questions, his exams are graded really rough. And the lectures put everyone to sleep. The homeworks connect only loosely with the notes he hands out (which are just the lectures he reads the notes for). It's not bad, but alright for a course. And the GSIs grade most of the stuff and are very lenient for marking which balances out this lukewarm professor.

Comment: Holland is super knowledgeable in his field. his lectures are super detailed but he assumes a lot of intricate details of Indo-European languages are common knowledge.

Comment: Professor Holland's love for historical linguistics definitely shone through. He's a bit awkward, but he loves it when students are as interested as he is. However... he doesn't understand if you just "don't get" a concept, though, and expects you to come to the same conclusions he does even though historical ling isn't remotely a hard science (grading is pretty much on your final answer). Homework is long, but mostly not too difficult.
