Comment: Professor was awesome! I would definitely recommend her. The class is great if you are interested and passionate about Gender and Women's Studies. For me, the readings and topics were intriguing, but I was never as deeply interested as some other classmates were. Take the class only if you are really interested in the subject!

Comment: Pretty chill AC class. I wish it fulfilled more than an AC class though... other AC classes also fulfill a breadth. Anyway, the professor is pretty nice. The class itself is discussion based. What I didn't like is the amount of reading. Some of the readings were okay but sometimes she'll assign hundreds of pages out of multiple books that were just so bring (stranger intimacy what was that). Pretty good class if you want to fulfill AC (and only AC) and learn a bit about gender, what is gender, and LGBT topics.

Comment: Absolutely the best R1B class ever, and I highly recommend Quinan as a teacher overall. I did all the readings and enjoyed each and every one of them. There are only 3 papers for the class, which stressed me out for God knows what reason (maybe it's because I was taking two hard science classes simultaneously, which resulted in me writing the papers the day before they were due). Overall, everything worked out fine. She is an extremely understanding person, and gave me an extension for the final paper because I had both my science finals back to back on the day it was originally due. I loved how we watched a film with every book we read, and the class discussions were enlightening. I truly felt it was a safe space to talk about whatever issues we wanted (pertaining to the material or not) and it was a great experience. Make sure you phase 1 this class because it will fill up and there will be a wait-list and there may be a chance you might not get in. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did, and good luck!

Comment: Loved this class! Quinan is really passionate about the subject matter and tries to establish a section feel in a huge lecture hall twice a week. The weekly assignments were blog entries on basically whatever you wanted which let you explore the subject matter on your own. The exams were easy enough if you kept up on your reading. She did take attendance so if you don't attend lecture then this isn't the class for you. Overall great class and I really learned a lot.

Comment: I loved this class. It really opened my eyes up to LGBTQ culture and issues... I had never known much about it before. Christine is really approachable and understanding, and as someone else has said, is more of a friend/mentor than just an instructor. Essay prompts are always flexible, and class activities and discussions are chill, but helpful at the same time. I wish I could take this class again!

Comment: She made me love writing, which is how awesome she is. She chose interesting books and movies for us to analyze, and the discussions in class made it easier to write my papers. She was more like a friend rather than a teacher, and the best part about the class was that it made me see my life differently and apply the ideas behind different types of bodies (ex: disability). It was a class that stood out from the rest as I will actually take something away from it and remember it in the future. She grades the essays reasonably and is helpful during office hours. The course is more analyzing the texts/movies and applying them to life focused rather than on improving your writing though.

Comment: Remains to be my favorite class taken at Cal so far with wealth and poverty taught by Robert Reich coming in as a close second. Honestly, I had no knowledge about gender and women's studies and Professor Quinan still managed to get me completely engaged and interested in the material. She respects everyone's opinions, encourages discussion and is very flexible with essay topics and a very fair grader. Definitely the best R1B to take! 3 papers, the last one is kind of long at 8-10 pages but other than that not much work compared to usually R requirement courses. You also get to watch a couple of movies usually ;)

Comment: Great class with Quinan. She is very passionate about GWS and it's obvious. Her book choices were fantastic and she really is able to enlighten on all GWS subjects! The essays were fair - we were allowed to pick our own thesis statements and even our own sources, and Quinan grades very fairly!! She is also very helpful during office hours.
