Comment: Do not take him unless you already know statstics or just taking this class for pass or no pass. He is adorable old man but he is really at explaining. There also is not much help offered throughout the class.

Comment: Purves is an adorable elderly professor. Super charming. The class material itself was really hard for me, and math is one of my better subjects. The book is very helpful, goes into detail, and makes it easier to understand. Purves's exams are really tricky, not like his homework questions at all. 90% of your grade is based on your exams. If you take this class, I highly recommend going to the SLC for the study group and drop-in tutoring. They give you worksheets to supplement the material, and that helped me study for the final quite a bit.

Comment: It was amazing. Purves actually cares if you learn the material and (although sometimes really slow) he goes over things in great detail so you get it. Im a science major and I really cant complain if I feel like a class is slow for once. They grade the homework kind of harsh but other wise really easy

Comment: Very poor lecturer. He knows his material, but he likes using VERY colloquial terms for Statistics concepts. Assignments are short but harshly graded. The material is not terribly difficult, but the poor presentation almost ensures that concepts will blend together. Do your own reading; it is better than the overhead projector slides that he uses for lectures.

Comment: If you took AP Statistics, BEWARE of this class. I got a 4 on AP Stats and thought this would be a nice way to boost my GPA because I was obviously good at statistics. I took this class and made the biggest mistake of my freshman year. I got my lowest grade all semester, and the worst part is, I absolutely tried. He wrote his book and uses terms that are not universally statistically accepted. He is against the p-value (anyone with an AP Stats background knows how ridiculous this is). Do not take this class. His lecture slides are not well organized and neither are his lectures. The class average for both the midterms and finals were F's. However, the class is curved, so I got an F on both the midterm and the final and ended up with a C in the class. Furthermore, I completely agree with this comment: Assignments are harshly graded. One little mistake can cost you 25% from an assignment. Tests are also harshly graded. Right answers may essentially earn no points due to inadequate conceptual explanation. Moreover, Purves is an incredibly inefficient and ineffective lecturer. Although he is very friendly, he takes almost the entire class to explain one simple problem. This is partially due to his reliance on poorly organized transparency slides. His lectures do not really help for the tests.

Comment: Purves truly sticks with the book a lot, which might explain why his name is listed on the cover :). He has a couple of humorous jokes that keeps you awake, but you can easily self-study through this course. Discussion sections are also by the book; in fact, we just do problems from the book! As an intro class that doesn't seem to satisfy many requirements, it's worth taking if you want a class that's definitely manageable for the units.
