Comment: Paxson is a great lecturer who is really passionate about computer security! He does a good job of incorporating recent developments into his lectures, which makes his lectures so much more interesting. The projects were cool, but I think they were unnecessarily frustrating, since a lot of students ended up spending days just working out tedious details about C. The assignments and exams were graded too harshly. Many of the questions were open to debate, yet you had to give the staff's answer to get points.

Comment: Great class, but tough. Paxson is a very passionate lecturer and it shows in his lectures. He really wants you to understand the material, and he and the TAs put in countless hours to make sure this is the case. Homework/exams were difficult: open-ended, sometimes vague and it requires some insight most of the time. Cool projects, though they can be a bit tedious. Workload is pretty light.

Comment: Paxson rocks. The subject material in this class is awesome and Paxson's enthusiasm and presentation skills really make it come alive. I'm not going to rate this class THAT highly though because the exams and assignments are truly terrible. Projects were OK, but the homework is so poorly written I want to cry sometimes. As far as I see, the only way you will do well on homework is if you REALLY keep up to date on piazza and go to office hours all the time. Homework questions tend to be very open-ended and vague, and yet they expect a small set of answers that practically require you to consult the instructors. Oh, and a huge part of your grade is decided by these bogus homeworks. Exams are in the same boat: vague, open-ended questions with answers that are often open to interpretation. I understand that for a class of this nature it's difficult to write good exams, but they really could have done a better job than this. Worth taking the class for sure (especially if it's with Paxson) but I definitely don't have the sugar-coated view of this class that many people seem to have.

Comment: Complete stickler when it comes to preventing people from any meaningful progress on projects. Would go on Piazza and delete questions that he felt were giving away too much hints and then specifically find the person who asked the question and deducted points from them. One question was literally "is the solution for number 1 supposed to take a long time?" Apparently that was too much information -- that person got points deducted. In fact, he posted on Piazza a warning to people not to post questions like that again, which hindered everyone's progress on the project because everyone was afraid to ask. Such fear-based "teaching" is completely counterproductive to the whole point of the class, which was to learn. Ruined what was an interesting class.
