Comment: His lectures are hard enough to understand considering the accent and the small handwriting coupled with the indistinguishable operators, but they're right out of the book, so coming to lecture isn't really all that important. Homework assignments are tolerable, but the exams are terrible. You'd ideally get 50 minutes, which is a vaguely reasonable time, but he'll come in late and take forever passing the exam out, so it's more like 40 minutes, which is far from reasonable. The final is 60% of the grade, so it makes things like homework feel like they're not worth doing. Try to find another professor for this class.

Comment: "Let me remind you all that the final exam will NOT be proportional in the number of questions compared to your midterms. In my opinion, the midterms were... uhhh... elementary problems. Of course, you might disagree with me." (The average was an F, kids were crying and angels were losing their wings as he spoke.) Ma is a smart guy... nobody can deny that - look at his credentials. I wonder what he'd be like if he actually tried to be good. It's clear he does the absolute minimum to get by teaching undergraduates. He won't even look at you or make any type of eye contact. Nobody clapped at the end of the semester... that's sad.

Comment: "Let us return to technical exposition..." Prof. Ma gets straight to the topic and discusses what's important with each idea. Though he may include an occasional joke during lecture, he usually is very dry topic wise. His accent may also take a little time getting used to. Homeworks out of the book, nothing unusual. Exam problems are often repeats of homework or pulled from the harder questions in the book. He tries to spread the curve so assigning grades is easier. A downside is that he may be condescending when answering a question he feels is on a rudimentary or redundant topic, but he answers all other questions to the bestof his ability. Overall: he's not great, but he's not that bad either.

Comment: Only take this class with Ma if you absolutely have to. His lectures aren't bad and neither are the homework assignments, but his testing is absurd. He will routinely show up late on exam days, pass out exams in the most (I'm sorry to be harsh, but it's necessary) idiotic way imaginable leaving a good 1/3 - 1/4 of the class with 5-10 minutes less time than the rest.

Comment: He's so theoretical and just sounds like he's reading a book. Exams reflect nothing like in the homework, superrr HARD!! and a horrible grading policy on the tests. By far my worst Class at Cal! But since final is 60% of the grade, if you can pull an A in the final, you'll have an A in the class, which is absolutely possible if you study everything in the book and his sample tests.

Comment: He is extremely boring and just basically tries to teach the textbook to you. The book was better at explaining anything than he is. He spends so much time talking about why he is going to make an assumption on a situation or why he wants to use a certain concept, so he naturally puts at least half the class to sleep during lecture. He likes to put some trick questions on the test and the make up 90% of your grade, with the final being 60%, which is unnecessarily stressful. Avoid him, if at all possible.

Comment: Lectures straight from the book and isn't very helpful during office hours. Homework is good preparation for the exams; midterms are fairly easy, though the final is something to watch out for.
