Comment: Homework assignments fairly easy. Labs were graded fairly for the most part. The exams were usually on the easier side.

Comment: Prof. Asta was pretty chill about everything. Because the material was simple, he kept the explanations straightforward, and the homework and exams covered strictly the explicit material from class. There were no trick questions. Homework was a surprisingly large percentage of the total grade, and the two midterms (10% each) surprisingly small, with the remainder coming down to lab reports and the final. The lab reports were a bit obnoxious because the concepts are often simple enough to be covered in a three-minute conversation, but you might spend three or more hours wrestling them into an acceptable format for the GSI's. That being said, both GSI's were very helpful in office hours, and covered all the bases in terms of required information on lab reports. I found some grading choices a bit confusing and frustrating, but it is clear that a few unexplained points are taken off or added here and there to assignments and exams in order to create a more reasonable distribution, and to avoid unreasonably high scores, such as the fabled 100% on a lab report that GSI Matt swears he will never give. I challenge you to get that 100%. Good hunting, everyone.

Comment: Took with Mark Asta Spring 2012. Asta is a very chill guy and care about students learning. Midterms were based on the homework problems which were from book and were no too difficult. Final was a bit tricky though. Labs were very manageable if you had written formal lab reports before, but I saw some students with pretty low lab grades. Formatting was a pretty big part of the lab writeups so if you're good at making things look pretty, the labs should be no problem. Lectures were a bit boring and from powerpoint slides, but the slides made it easy to review for the midterms and final. Highly recommended if you want to gain a basic understanding of the properties of materials including structure, crystalline imperfections, equilibrium phase diagrams, thermal processing, electrical properties, mechanical properties, optical properties, strengthening and hardening stuff as well. The labs didnt always correlate weekly to what was being covered but eventually overlapped somewhat.

Comment: Great professor and GSIs! All very clear, organized, and helpful. Lab write ups are quite time consuming for a 3 unit course, but didn't cover overly difficult concepts. The book was less than helpful; luckily everything that we needed was provided in lecture. Tests are pretty much based off homework and involve a lot of plugging and chugging of numbers [with all formulas are provided]. Professor Asta's lectures are sort of dry, but he makes sure to go over difficult concepts slowly and is good at answering questions.

Comment: Class is easy mode. Very friendly; in fact, most MSE professors in my experience have been very friendly people. Lecture is straightforward, and you can tell he is enthusiastic about material. But his soft and pleasant voice can be very sleep-inducing.

Comment: Very good at explaining the material. His lectures I learn everything I need to know for the homework and the exams without ever having read the book. The lectures are very clear and he is able to explain the concepts in ways that are easy to understand and unambiguous. Would definitely take another class from him.
