Comment: It's a freshman seminar. Seriously. Show up and get an A.

Comment: I came to this class wanting to love the subject, and I'm still willing to give applied geophysics a chance, but Rector could not be called an encouraging or motivating professor. Unfortunately, he's the only applied geophysicist the school has so he can't be avoided. He gave a few lectures, but the majority of the class was an "open-ended research problem" or led by the other professor (Dreger). This would have been awesome if done right. Unfortunately, it seemed more like an excuse to come to class unprepared. His tips weren't so helpful or clear, and I don't think he prepared for class section at all. This is contrasted with the co-professor Dreger who seemed to honestly be trying even though it was his first time teaching the class and he usually does more pure geophysics. Rector is not a tough grader by any means, but after discussing with my peers we can't figure out his grading system -- it isn't how we did on midterms, hw, and the project because when we calculated each others percentages it didn't match the order of our grades. I truly wouldn't be surprised if he randomly assigned A, A-, or B+ to every student or picked favorites. That said, the exams and assignments were easy -- unfortunately getting 97% on the exam and 100% on hw's and putting way more into the project than I really should have wasn't a solid A. I'd avoid this if you normally get As -- ironically, if you need a GPA boost this is also your class since you won't get below B+ and poor performance might not even matter too much. That said, I still really really want to like this guy and I haven't given any other professor a negative review ever -- but he's been blatantly unhelpful or absent in my experience. Maybe he's just too busy with his businesses to put his all into being a professor. His enthusiasm and helpfulness lies outside the classroom.

Comment: Completing the assignments is a matter of having been doing what you're supposed to outside the classroom -- if you're involved, an officer, compete on a competition team, or volunteer, then you've already done half the work. If not, let's be honest... that's on you. There are no exams. The GSI ran the class, and Rector sat back and observed (if he was even present). The GSI did a pretty good job, but I'm not sure Rector had any enthusiasm for this class whatsoever. However, for what the class is, you can't knock Rector too much overall. That said, I think something much more could be done with this unit...

Comment: For CE 92, Rector pretty much just sat there and watched over the class. It was an easy class anyways. 1 unit and not bad.
